Lockhart City Council approved a sponsorship agreement with Texas Monthly for the Barbecue World’s Fair scheduled November 1–2, 2025, while city staff and event organizers discussed crowd control, vendor numbers, and coordination around downtown construction.
The sponsorship passed on a 7–0 vote. City staff said the event will use downtown and City Park, require street closures and first‑responder support, and include in‑kind city contributions plus digital and print promotion in Texas Monthly.
The council heard from Sean Kelly, Lockhart public works director, who summarized the contract and noted this would be Texas Monthly’s fourth consecutive year in Lockhart. “The event is slated for November first and second of this year and will be held in the historic downtown and also at City Park,” Kelly said.
Texas Monthly account director Elda Arellano told council the magazine will run a full‑page ad timed with the June issue and that the company’s editorial release of a new Top 50 barbecue list will drive new attendance. Neil, the festival production lead, said the vendor lineup will change on Sunday because of the new list.
Council members and Texas Monthly staff discussed recurring crowding and long lines on Saturday. Arellano said organizers and restaurants try to plan service to shorten lines but that some conditions—such as wind events that disrupted service last year—are hard to anticipate. One council member pressed staff about vendor counts and whether the footprint would expand; Texas Monthly said expansion is a long‑term option but that this year they planned to hold the footprint similar to prior years while coordinating around the downtown construction project.
Council members asked about potential multiyear contracts; Texas Monthly and city staff said they had discussed a possible multiyear arrangement but intended to delay formal contract changes until 2026 to align with advertising schedules and attorney review.
The council asked staff to remain involved in operational planning, particularly for sanitation, vendor staging and coordination with DeNucci Constructors on the downtown project. City staff reiterated that sanitary and safety responsibilities are primarily those of the event organizer under the agreement, but that staff will continue to coordinate logistics.
