Organizers representing a community bocce group asked the Oroville City Council during public comment on April 1 for financial assistance or guidance on grant sources to build regulation bocce courts at the city golf course.
Janice White (resident/organizer) and supporters described plans for tournament‑sized courts (about 80 by 12 feet, regulation dimensions) and said volunteer contractors and donors are ready to contribute labor and materials. White and other speakers asked the council to consider recreational grants and other creative staff assistance to get the project started. “We have at least a hundred people already ready to go, wanna be part of it,” one organizer told the council, and White estimated roughly $60,000 would cover initial capital costs.
Council staff directed the presenters to leave contact information with the clerk so staff could follow up and advised them to monitor supplemental benefits or recreation grant opportunities. Council members said they would look for possible creative staff assistance and funding avenues.
Speakers included Janice White, Ron Wheeler and Bruce Hark; Ron Wheeler provided his name for the record. The group said the golf‑course operator is supportive and that some tournament organizers from Penn Valley had expressed interest in participating once courts are built.
