The City Council’s Public Safety Committee discussed a proposed transfer of a vehicle from a paid fire company to a volunteer fire company during its April 8 work session and agreed to advance the item toward the legislative session.
Committee members described the action as a transfer of public property that qualifies for direct transfer to a volunteer fire company without a formal public bid. Councilman Jones said the vehicle is “a very old vehicle. I think the number's like $2,000 something,” and committee members noted there was no representative from the fire company present. The committee debated whether to leave the item in committee or move it to the legislative session and ultimately decided to refer Resolution 17 to the legislation session; members said the council could withdraw the matter at the legislative session if the volunteer company failed to appear or provide required information.
No formal vote was recorded at the April 8 work session. The council chair suggested suspending rules on the next legislative meeting if the volunteer company appears late, or otherwise the council could proceed to vote or withdraw the referral. The committee characterized the transfer as “pretty perfunctory” but recommended the volunteer company be asked to appear at the legislative meeting if additional details were needed.
