The United Nations called for urgent action to prevent famine from spreading in Sudan, where intensified fighting and access constraints have left several locations facing famine or at risk of famine.
The UN told reporters that famine is occurring in at least five locations, including the Abushook displacement camp north of Al Fasher. The briefing said roughly 640,000 people are living in affected areas such as displacement camps and host communities in the Western and Southern regions.
The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said some 25,000,000 people in Sudan are acutely food insecure, and it urged immediate, safe and unimpeded access for aid organizations. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and partners asked for more than $82,000,000 to assist about 7,500,000 farmers and their families with seeds and other critical support ahead of the June planting season.
The UN spokesperson stressed that timely agricultural assistance is needed not only to avert famine but also to restore livelihoods and build resilience among the country's most vulnerable communities. The briefing reiterated that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected under international humanitarian law.
