Klamath County authorizes Public Works to solicit bids for Silver Lake Road repairs and local sidewalk maintenance

Public Works staff described a roughly four-mile longitudinal crack on Silver Lake Road where a third of the roadbed, built on native, non-railroad fill, is settling. Staff said they plan to use a rock wheel excavator to trench and backfill the crack and test a polyethylene or polyurethane binder to lock the repaired material and limit future settlement. Public Works expects to perform the main work in September or October after contracting and insurance are in place and after chip-seal season.
The board voted to authorize Public Works to issue a request for quotes for mechanical wheel trencher construction services on Silver Lake Road. The motion carried without recorded opposition.
Separately, Public Works presented a quote package for grouped sidewalk repairs in an area near the urban growth boundary. Officials said about 60 sidewalk heaves exist in the area, ranging from about 1–6 inches; crews repaired roughly 30 last year. The county will group repairs on Madison and Patterson streets and seek local contractors for concrete work, aiming to keep the procurement under $50,000 so prevailing-wage requirements may not apply; bids will determine whether prevailing wages are required.

Public Works noted Silver Lake Road is approximately 35 miles long and was cited as one of the county roads funded in part by Secure Rural Schools funds to maintain 98 miles of roads and 32 bridges covered by that funding allocation. Staff also said they will run a small test strip of the binder at the road shop within several weeks.
No specific contract amounts were approved at the meeting; the actions authorize the county to solicit bids and include no immediate fiscal impact recorded.
