The Soledad City Council on Oct. 1 voted unanimously to adopt a resolution supporting Proposition 50, a statewide ballot measure that would authorize a specific congressional map amendment process aimed at addressing recent redistricting outcomes in other states.
Councilmember Fernando Anzaldo Sanchez introduced the referral and said the item was prompted by the Monterey County Board of Supervisors’ recent action supporting the proposition. “This is about protecting democratic representation for communities who are at risk of being under‑represented,” he said. He described the measure as a temporary, targeted change that would remain in effect only until 2030.
City staff briefed council on the proposition’s text and the county’s reasoning. Staff also noted the resolution would be circulated to regional partners and the city’s legislative contacts to signal local support. Several council members said the position is not a partisan endorsement but a defense of inclusive representation for the city’s residents, many of whom are part of communities of color and immigrant families.
The council voted in favor on a roll call; staff said the resolution will be transmitted to the county and the city’s legislative representatives and also provided to the city’s legislative advocacy contacts for distribution.
Council directed staff to provide the adopted resolution to the City’s lobbyist and to local and county officials.
