Sheriff briefs commissioners on jail-based opioid recovery program as county adopts two opioid-restricted donation ordinances

Vandiver County Sheriff Noah Robinson briefed the Board of Commissioners on March 18 about a new jail-based opioid recovery program and said the commission’s approval of two ordinances will help fund treatment initiatives.
"We're very excited to get this program underway and and incredibly grateful for the commission's support in creating a program to support opioid addiction in the jail," Sheriff Noah Robinson told commissioners. He said the program will be part of a new Southwest Indiana Recovery and Empowerment Facility inside the jail and that officials expect the program "to have a very meaningful impact to the inmates there and should directly result in lower recidivism." Robinson said he would keep commissioners informed about announcements and the official grand opening.
The commission waived a second reading and approved COdot03-25-007, an ordinance establishing an opioid-restricted donation fund for the Town of Donaldson, and later approved COdot03-25-009, the same type of fund for the City of Evansville. Both ordinances were approved on first and final reading during the March 18 meeting.
When asked for a time frame, the sheriff said the launch would be measured in "weeks." The sheriff also referenced grant support in connection with the Evansville ordinance.
Commissioners called the program "extremely important" on the record and thanked the sheriff for his work. No public comments were recorded on the ordinances during the meeting.
