Council approves pay increases for Burnett Park part-time security staff

Zach Waltham, director of Burnett Park, asked the council to approve hourly pay increases for two part-time security positions. The council approved raises that increase weekday security pay from $13.50 to $15.00 and weekend security pay from $16.50 to $18.00 per hour.
Waltham said the positions are typically filled by retired residents because the hours are difficult (late-night coverage, including shifts that run until 2 a.m.) and that turnover has been higher for weekend coverage. He said one hire is a long-serving weekend worker and another is a retired, 76-year-old who reliably fills weekday hours.
Council members asked whether the positions have law enforcement backgrounds, how much the staff work, and whether they receive benefits. Waltham confirmed the positions are part-time (about 29 hours per week on average) and do not qualify for county benefits. The council approved the pay adjustments by voice vote.
