El Mirage council meeting: public comments on fireworks, consent agenda approved, mayor recounts DC visits

The El Mirage City Council on Tuesday approved the consent agenda and heard public comments urging stronger enforcement against commercial-grade fireworks and thanking police for a rapid response to a report of a deceased animal.
During the call to the public, resident Jeff Locke described a situation on Bridal where a landscaper found a deceased dog and the property manager contacted the county and the police non-emergency line; Locke thanked city responders for a prompt police response. Locke also asked whether the city's police could increase patrols and issue warnings or citations around holidays to deter commercial-grade fireworks that disturb neighborhoods.
"They got with her in, like, 2 minutes and said that he would send somebody out, and they did," Jeff Locke said of the police response.
Ricardo Rodriguez, calling in from Surprise, Arizona, used public comment to thank Vice Mayor Parsons, Council Member Eldridge, Council Member Gentry and Nora McDaniel for what he described as support for transparency in El Mirage. Steve Gilliam, an El Mirage resident of 20 years, used his time to urge greater resident participation in city events and offered suggestions about placement of the public speaker area.
The council approved consent agenda items 1 through 4, including minutes for a council work session and a council meeting, in a single motion made by Vice Mayor Parsons and seconded by Council Member Dorsey. The motion passed on a voice vote.
Mayor Hermosillo used the council summary portion of the meeting to report on a recent trip to Washington, D.C., where he and several council members attended the National League of Cities conference, met with federal officials including a briefing regarding Luke Air Force Base, and conducted Hill visits with Congressman Paul Gosar and staff from Senator Kyrsten Sinema's office (as referred to in meeting discussion). Hermosillo also announced the recent opening of Station Coffee and the Office Suites on March 10 and reminded residents about a city job fair set for March 26 from noon to 5 p.m. at the El Mirage City Library with employers including CarMax and others.
The mayor and several council members offered condolences for former council member Manuel Gonzalez, whose funeral services were scheduled Friday at Sunwest Funeral Home and Santa Teresita Catholic Church in El Mirage. Council Member Norton McDaniel reported the city applied for CDAC grants for Hohokam Trail expansion and water main replacements but did not rank among the cities receiving those grants.
The meeting lasted roughly 23 minutes and concluded with a motion to adjourn, which passed unanimously. City Manager provided no items during the city manager comments portion of the meeting.
No formal directives, ordinances or budgetary votes were taken beyond the consent agenda approvals recorded in the meeting minutes.
