Council highlights parks and trail upgrades, MLK Equality Trail work and Griffin Park renaming

City Council members and staff described a range of park and trail projects planned or underway, with several projects funded by grants and internal allocations.

Council member Will Forgrave, who represents the Sixth Ward, highlighted work on Ella Sharp Park and a proposal to create a mountain-bike trail through adjacent woods. He described the projects as "low risk, high reward" for recreation and noted comprehensive upkeep plans.

Forgrave said the city's MLK Equality Trail will be reconstructed this summer and fall. "Come this fall, every inch of that section will be a 12 foot wide concrete path that is well lit and well maintained for the first time in, I think, a generation," he said. Forgrave also noted the city's decision to rename New Leaf Park to Griffin Park in honor of Marty Griffin and his family's public service.

Park improvements listed by Forgrave included renovation of the Booz Recreation Center with ARPA funds, upgrades to playground equipment at the MLK center supported by roughly $650,000 in grant funds, additions to Workers Memorial Park, and upgrades to Rotary and Exchange parks. Forgrave said staff are auditing and cataloging park equipment to improve maintenance.

Speakers credited parks-and-recreation staff and volunteers for operating 29 parks, three recreation facilities and two cemeteries. The city said some projects come from grant funds and others are planned as investments expected to pay for themselves over time through increased programming and usage.
