Evansville opens demolition bids for multiple properties; low bidders reported, board takes results under advisement

The City of Evansville Building Commission and Board of Public Safety opened and recorded bids for demolition at eight properties and took the bids under advisement on Feb. 26.
Kim Josie of the building commission read the list of properties for which the city sought demolition bids: 628 Bayard Park Drive; 609 E. Blackford Ave.; 2809 C Street (fire damaged); 1114 N. Fourth Ave.; 1305 Harriet St. (shed only); 212 E. Oregon St. (fire damaged house and shed carport); 413 Reed St.; and 719 Wagner Ave. Josie asked the board to open bids for those addresses.
Bids were read into the record for three bidders. Stemley Excavating submitted the following bids: 628 Bayard Park Drive, $18,826; 609 E. Blackford Ave., $13,710; 2809 C St., $5,838; 1114 N. Fourth Ave., $8,371; 1305 Harriet St., $2,400; 212 E. Oregon St., $8,285; 413 Reed St., $5,476; 719 Wagner Ave., $8,549. Velpen submitted bids for several properties including $7,350 for 1114 N. Fourth Ave. and $8,325 for 413 Reed St. Heidorn Excavating LLC submitted bids including $21,300 for 628 Bayard Park Drive and $9,680 for 719 Wagner Ave.
The board recorded the low bidder by address as follows: 628 Bayard Park Drive: Stemley Excavating ($18,826); 609 E. Blackford Ave.: Stemley Excavating ($13,710); 2809 C St.: Stemley Excavating ($5,838); 1114 N. Fourth Ave.: Velpen ($7,350); 1305 Harriet St.: Heidorn Excavating ($1,530); 212 E. Oregon St.: Velpen ($7,420); 413 Reed St.: Stemley Excavating ($5,476); 719 Wagner Ave.: Velpen ($8,150). The board voted to take the bids under advisement for review and contractor qualification checks before award.
Building commission staff said all bidders on the list had previously submitted required insurance and equipment paperwork; the city's inspector will document site cleanup after demolition work and must approve completion before final invoices are paid.
The board will consider award recommendations at a future meeting after staff reviews bids and qualifications.
