PSC approves EdgeInsights’ broker license cancellation; commissioners ask staff to monitor small commercial customers

The Public Service Commission voted to approve EdgeInsights Inc.’s request to cancel its electricity and gas broker licenses during its March 5, 2025 administrative meeting.

Commissioners considered statutory and consumer-protection concerns raised by the Maryland Office of People’s Counsel (OPC) and staff. OPC said it had not opined on the filing because EdgeInsights appeared to serve only commercial and industrial customers, not residential customers. OPC told the commission it would support extending previous commission practices to commercial and industrial customers if the commission chose to do so.

Staff told the commission the broker served only commercial and industrial (C&I) customers in a small number of service territories, that the company had stopped serving customers months earlier, and that no complaints had been filed with the Consumer Affairs Division (CAD) during the lapse. Staff recommended approving the cancellation request. On that basis, the chair moved to approve the cancellation; Commissioners Sushman, Barbet and Richard voted “Aye.”

Commissioner Sushman said the bond requirement historically existed to protect ratepayers and asked staff to watch for any future problems affecting small commercial customers. Staff agreed to monitor the issue and alert the commission if complaints or other problems arise, so the commission could consider further action if necessary.

The approval was taken on the consent agenda; no bond-maintenance condition was imposed for EdgeInsights at the meeting.

Votes at the meeting show unanimous approval of the cancellation request.
