Utah House adopts package of bills on weapons recodification, election law, homelessness oversight and more

The Utah House of Representatives approved a package of bills and conference reports on March 6, 2025, sending measures on weapons recodification, election law changes, homelessness oversight, and other topics to the Senate or onward for signature.

Second Substitute House Bill 128, the dangerous-weapons recodification, passed unanimously, 67-0. Sponsors said the firearms provisions had been separated into a standalone recodification while retaining a provision to prevent school-aged children from bringing firearms to school with parental permission; sponsors said there were no other policy changes in the substitute.

Third Substitute House Bill 191, high school credit amendments, passed 64-4. The sponsor said a sunset date on reporting was added at the request of the Alpine School District.

Substitute House Bill 226, criminal amendments, passed 56-11. The sponsor described the Senate changes as tailoring reductions in some class A misdemeanors and removing a nonprofit component; the sponsor said the amended bill remained effective and more…
