Residents urge expanded public use of Mayfield town hall; pantry and "Mayfield University" idea proposed

Several residents told the Mayfield Town Council on March 12 that the town hall is underused and urged the council to make space available for recurring community activities and small groups at low or no cost.

Doug, who said he represents a community group using the name "Mayfield University, Inc.," asked the council to consider offering the town hall more frequently to volunteer-led classes and clubs. “I just think there’s a place for people to come and enjoy…we have a lot of talented people in town,” he said, offering to help underwrite fees if charging the public were necessary.

Council members noted the town already maintains a rental form with a liability-waiver paragraph and that some civic groups (for example, the Lions Club) have historically been allowed free use. Staff said there is a standard reservation form that lists fees and a bolded liability waiver; the council suggested clarifying the policy and publishing a simple calendar for recurring community use.

A separate proposal from a representative of the local food pantry described a small, weatherproof, publicly accessible “pantry” (a shed where residents could leave or take nonperishable food items) and asked whether the council would be open to permitting or hosting one on town property. Council members were generally supportive and asked staff to identify possible locations and any liability or maintenance implications.

Council asked staff to prepare a simple plan for expanded community use: a clear calendar/booking process, a review of current fee policy and the liability waiver, and options for hosting a small community pantry that would be managed by volunteers. No fee change or formal policy amendment was adopted at the meeting.
