The Wicomico County Board of Education gave consensus for a pilot of AP Precalculus to begin in the coming fall semester.
District staff presenter Lisa McKinnon described the pilot as a strategy to expand AP course offerings and to prepare students for AP Calculus, noting the district aims to introduce an advanced placement transition course before AP Calculus and AP Calculus II. McKinnon said the district secured a College Board AP Summer Institute placement, funded by a state grant, allowing two teachers to attend at no cost; the College Board materials include a textbook consistent with the district’s current trigonometry/precalculus text, so staff do not expect additional district textbook expenditures for the pilot.
Staff said they expect sufficient student interest to run the pilot, with an expectation of roughly 25 students at each of Bennett High School and Wicomico High School. Board members voiced support and the board gave consensus to move the pilot forward; the item was presented for board agreement rather than a formal roll-call vote.
Next steps: staff will proceed with teacher training and finalize fall scheduling for the pilot. If the pilot expands, staff said they will return with additional operational and budget details.
