Defiance council adopts annexation of 33.61 acres in Richland Township

The Defiance City Council voted on Aug. 12 to accept an expedited annexation petition that adds 33.61 acres in Richland Township to the City of Defiance.
The law director, Mister O'Donnell, told council the action implements the final step of an expedited Type 2 unilateral annexation. He said the board of commissioners had already approved the annexation earlier in the summer and cited Ohio law that gives council authority to accept or reject the petition within 60 days of receiving the board’s approval. "Section 709.04 of the Ohio Revised Code gives council the authority to accept or reject that petition within 60 days of receipt of that approval from the board of commissioners," O'Donnell said.
Why it matters: Annexation changes municipal boundaries and city service responsibilities for the affected land. O'Donnell said the petitioner and their counsel were present for questions but did not speak.
Outcome: Council moved to suspend the rules and adopted the ordinance accepting the annexation during the Aug. 12 meeting.
What’s next: The annexed property will be subject to city regulations and services going forward, consistent with the terms set during the annexation process and the earlier service resolution council passed in May.
