Athletic leaders presented an update to the board on Feb. 13 highlighting academic performance among student-athletes, sportsmanship recognitions and staffing recommendations.
Nate Connor, the district athletic director, and colleagues described several accomplishments: improved team GPAs (the boys basketball team posted a 3.4 for the last grading period and the football team improved average GPA by approximately 0.5 points), reconditioned middle-school football equipment for safety, expanded participation across sports, and stronger community partnerships including merchandise and local vendor partnerships.
Connor said the department recommended hiring a new baseball coach and bringing in Latoya Hawkins (described as having professional and community baseball ties) to support the program; Connor said those recommendations were board-approved. The department also emphasized coaching alignment across middle and high school, vetting and training for middle-school coaches, and student leadership programming (SALT) to cultivate leaders who attend statewide conferences.
Why it matters: the update links athletics to academic outcomes, safety investments and community engagement. Staffing and program recommendations reported by athletics will shape school sports opportunities and community visibility over the coming school year.
Next steps: the athletic office will continue to coordinate head-coach recommendations, middle-school hiring/training and community engagement activities; the department is partnering with district communications to highlight athletes and events.
