Gary schools introduce new chief technology officer Alvin Richards

The Gary Community School Corporation introduced Alvin Richards as its new chief technology officer during the Feb. 13 board meeting.
Staff described Richards as an IT executive with more than 20 years of experience in K–12 and higher education technology leadership. Richards said he is focused on technology modernization, infrastructure upgrades and digital equity initiatives and described examples from prior roles, including a customer-relationship-management rollout that reduced registration time at a previous institution.
Richards told the board he has spent his first days meeting district staff and touring facilities. He said he and the technology team plan to pursue programs that expose students to contemporary skills — naming examples such as drone programming and satellite-related coursework for secondary grades — and emphasized the need to keep district technology “on the cutting edge.” Richards thanked the board and said he looks forward to implementing systems that support students, teachers and administrators.
Next steps: Richards will lead the district technology implementation, coordinate with the technology team on the recently approved WAN contract and provide updates to the board as projects advance.
