District details $500,000 Hard Rock Casino gift and planned uses for students

Chelsea Williamson, the district’s chief public and community relations officer, told the board on Feb. 13 that the Gary Community School Corporation received a $500,000 gift from Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana and that the district must follow donor restrictions when allocating the funds.

Williamson said the donation carries specific guidelines requiring the money be used for items that directly impact students and cannot be used for salaries or unsustainable recurring expenses. District leaders convened building‑level teams to propose needs, and the administration selected a list of projects — including sensory equipment for special‑needs students and gym/wall mats — that fit the donor’s parameters. Williamson said the district will provide periodic reports to the board as projects are completed and directed attendees to the district website for a full press release.

Why it matters: a $500,000 private gift is a substantial one-time infusion that can accelerate capital or programmatic improvements, but donor restrictions limit how the funds may be spent. Williamson said a prior proposal previously submitted did not meet the donor's criteria, prompting the district to rework its requests.

What was said: “There were specific guidelines that specifically said that this must go to impact children, serving the children of the district. And so that means no salaries or things that could not be sustained,” Williamson said. She added that school leaders across the district “came together to discuss what needs they had in their specific buildings and then presented that to the group for whether it fit the guidelines or not.”
