Supervisor Sauter, who said he and Melgar introduced the motion together, described the policy as a way to normalize official paid leave and make it easier for parents and caregivers to serve. He noted his own family is expecting a child in weeks and said formal policy would provide clarity for members balancing public service and caregiving.
