Supervisors Melgar and Sautter introduce motion to formalize parental leave policy for Board members

Supervisors Shamann Walton? (note: transcript reference), Melgar and Sautter introduced a motion March 11 to formalize a parental leave policy for San Francisco's Board of Supervisors that would align board practice with recent state changes allowing some remote attendance for just cause or emergency circumstances.

Supervisor Melgar said the move completes long-running efforts that began with a 2006 charter amendment and subsequent local changes meant to allow remote participation, and said state law has only recently advanced to permit limited remote attendance. "As such, we need to formally adopt a parental leave policy for the Board of Supervisors members to fully align with these updates and to provide the ability for members to take official leave to bond with their new children and to be supported in that role," Supervisor Melgar said.

Supervisor Sauter, who said he and Melgar introduced the motion together, described the policy as a way to normalize official paid leave and make it easier for parents and caregivers to serve. He noted his own family is expecting a child in weeks and said formal policy would provide clarity for members balancing public service and caregiving.
