Council hears updates on community events, planters, playground and restroom design

Council members reviewed several community and parks items on March 12, including the Easter egg hunt and fire truck dedication scheduled for April 19, a decision to have the town purchase flowers for downtown planters, Pioneer Church handrail repairs, a craft night schedule and plans to pursue a new playground grant instead of the previously considered Christine Watkins/CDBG option.
Events and public activities Fire/rescue staff said the town will combine the annual Easter egg hunt with a dedication/open house for a refurbished fire truck on April 19. The truck is capable of operating now but staff expect some minor repairs to be completed before officially placing it in service that date. The council also discussed fireworks for the summer celebration and noted organizers will begin soliciting donations early.
Parks, planters and programs Council member Melissa said the town will buy flowers for the planters and is getting quotes for planting versus town staff doing the work. She also described a proposal to create a program recognizing long-serving residents with a plaque and biography in the council conference room; the council supported naming the first honoree as Boyd Jacobson and inviting family to a dedication.
Playground and restrooms Staff reported the town will not pursue one grant option associated with Christine Watkins because the available grant amount would trigger red flags in the application review; instead, the town is pursuing playground funding through other sources. Restroom architectural plans are nearly complete; staff said mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural details should be wrapped up in a few weeks so the project will be "shelf ready" for bidding once funding is secured.
Programs and schedules The town will start a monthly craft-and-chat night at the recreation center beginning in April; organizers said sessions will generally be on the fourth Wednesday of the month and costs will vary by activity (examples given ranged from free up to about $20). The craft session scheduled for March will run March 18 at 7 p.m. and will cost $3 for a decoupage Easter-egg activity.
No formal council votes were required on these community items at the meeting.
