Summary

About 200 students from roughly 10 local high schools joined United Way volunteers to paint, mulch and clear brush on Harrisburg’s City Island as part of a spring cleanup, students said.

About 200 students from about 10 local high schools and United Way volunteers worked on City Island in Harrisburg to prepare the park for spring, student volunteers said.

Students and volunteers spent the event painting, laying mulch and clearing brush to ready the public space for the season. “We have United Way volunteers, from various local businesses. We have about 200 students from about 10 local high schools, and we are getting the island ready for spring. Spring. It's nice to see everybody excited to do it. It's nice to see the students excited to do it,” said Student 1, a student volunteer.

Student volunteers described the work as both practical and community-minded. “We were out here doing, you name it, painting, mulching, cleaning brush, and it just gets everybody excited. And we're just out here rolling, cleaning it up after winter, and getting it ready for the season,” Student 1 said.

Another student described volunteering as a personal value and a way to help the broader community. “Volunteering for me means helping others, whether that's in the community or just, helping somebody with, like, homework or anything like that. Just helping in general. I I do enjoy helping others. That's something my parents have always put and taught me to do, and I know that helping others is isn't just helping me and making me happy. It's also helping the community,” Student 2, a student volunteer, said.

Student 3, a student volunteer and class officer, said participants hoped to make the cleanup an ongoing effort. “I really like everything that's happening here. I think this is a great opportunity to bring all these students together and all work on a common goal. I think it's really cool. Volunteering is really important to me. I think I always wanna look for opportunities where I can help my community and bring other students that I know,” Student 3 said. Student 3 added that class officers planned to continue participating in coming years.

A senior participant encouraged younger students to try volunteering. “I graduate this year, but any freshman, sophomore, junior, or even senior that likes to, help out in the community should get involved. And even if you don't, just try it out. It's a nice experience,” Student 2 said.

The event focused on routine park upkeep rather than policy decisions or funding changes. Organizers and volunteers emphasized continuity, community engagement and preparing City Island, a public recreational resource in Harrisburg, for the spring season.
