Commission approves chip seal aid, road vacation, radio booster and signs off on workforce merger

Ellis County commissioners approved four routine but consequential items during their April 1 meeting: county assistance for a City of Ellis chip-seal project, Resolution No. 2025-06 vacating part of Saint Jacob Street, a purchase order to install a public-safety radio booster system in the administrative center basement and county signatures to support a Northwest–Southwest workforce-area merger.
The actions were taken by a three-member commission that recorded unanimous votes where roll-call votes were held. Chair Michael Burgess, Commissioner Veil Younger and Commissioner Nathan Leiker voted in favor where votes were recorded.
The motion to assist the City of Ellis with its chip-seal and asphalt maintenance—using county labor and equipment—was moved and seconded during discussion of public-works cooperation. The commission approved the request 3-0.
The commission then approved Resolution No. 2025-06, vacating the county right-of-way for a portion of Saint Jacob Street in Block 10 of Catherine, Kansas. County staff confirmed certified notice to affected landowners and said no protests were lodged; the resolution passed 3-0.
The board also authorized a purchase order (PO No. 7914) to install multiple in‑building radio boosters in the basement of the county administrative center to improve public-safety radio coverage in that facility. The commission approved the purchase order by unanimous vote.
Finally, commissioners agreed to sign and return paperwork supporting the statutory merger of the Northwest and Southwest workforce regions that took effect in January, enabling those regional workforce boards to proceed with a combined governance structure; staff will transmit the county’s signature by email.
