Representative introduced House Bill 554, concerning placement of political advertisement on municipal property, and the committee opened the public hearing. No in-person supporters testified; four individuals registered opposition online.
Committee discussion in executive session indicated the attorney general’s office had raised confusion in the bill’s initial sentence, and senators favored language the Senate had used in a parallel measure to clarify the distinction between private and public property. One senator said the Senate version split private and public property language to make clear signs are not allowed on public property while private property standards remain governed by permission from the owner.
The committee did not take a final vote on HB 554. Senators said they would draft an amendment using the Senate bill’s language, remove unclear wording, and then send the amended bill back to the House for consideration.
