Mifflin County commissioners approve routine business, contracts and community grants

The commissioners approved one-time contributions of $5,000 each to the community pools in Lewistown and Burnham. A pool representative, speaking after the grant was presented, said the funds helped purchase a security system and renovations: “We purchased a security system for the pool. How many cameras did we end up with? 15. 15 or 16. And it really helped with incidents at the pool plus all the renovations we did.”
The board read and approved a proclamation declaring April 2025 as Pennsylvania 811 Safe Digging Month, citing Pennsylvania Act 287 of 1974 as amended and encouraging residents to contact PA 811 at www.pa1call.org before digging.
Other approved routine items included: - Exoneration of specified 2023 delinquent real estate taxes for parcel number 19, relieving the county tax collector of collection responsibility. - A purchase-of-service agreement with attorney Mark Remy to provide assistant district attorney services for March through Dec. 31, 2025, at a monthly sum stated in the meeting. - A one-year maintenance agreement with PDCI Allen for inspection, sanitation and cleaning of kitchen equipment at the county correctional facility. - A one-year public defender legal services agreement with Jerry Wagner for criminal defense services through Dec. 31, 2025, for a contract sum of $30,000, to be paid in bimonthly installments and covered by an indigent defense grant. - A one-year expansion agreement with Vigilant for probation department services.
The board accepted a modification to a previously approved memorandum of understanding for countywide action-plan work (related to nutrient and sediment reduction projects) to extend the agreement through the grant’s remaining term.
Personnel actions approved by the commissioners included a resignation (part-time 911 telecommunicator), multiple hires across children & youth, probation and corrections, and conversion of an unpaid internship to a paid internship; effective dates were announced during the meeting.
