Dare County Public Works will host a three-day household hazardous waste collection for residents May 8–10, 2025, with drop-off events at sites on the Northern Beaches, Buxton and at the Dare County Public Works facility. Residents may bring paints, solvents, automotive fluids and other household hazardous materials; some items are not accepted. For information, call 475-5843.
The collection is intended to provide a safe, convenient way for residents to dispose of hazardous household materials and reduce environmental risks. "Let's work together for a cleaner, greener Dare County," said a Dare County Public Works staff member.
Accepted materials listed by organizers include paint and paint-related products (polishes, varnishes, turpentine), aerosol cans, adhesives, motor oil, antifreeze, fuel additives, household cleaners, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, gasoline, mercury-containing items, pool chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs and automotive batteries and small batteries. Organizers said the event is for typical household hazardous waste; commercial, business or industrial waste is not usually accepted.
Officials also said some items will not be accepted, including explosives, bullets, radioactive material, 55-gallon drums of material and cylinders other than propane and fire extinguisher cylinders. Residents with items not accepted at the collection were told to contact Dare County Public Works for guidance.
Schedule and locations announced by staff are: - Kitty Hawk Town Hall — Thursday, May 8, 2025, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; - Buxton Transfer Station — Friday, May 9, 2025, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.; - Dare County Public Works facility — Saturday, May 10, 2025, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Organizers said the three events cover multiple collection sites to serve different parts of the county; residents should bring materials in labeled containers where possible.
