The Select Board voted Monday to approve a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Massachusetts Health Officers Association (MHOA) to develop and implement a sustainable tobacco-control program in Lakeville, and to appoint MHOA as the town's tobacco agent for the one-year term.
Town staff said the board needed to ratify the MOU formally even though staff had already signed administrative documents. The MOU runs from April 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026 and covers MHOA-provided tobacco compliance and education activities funded through a grant.
The board also voted to appoint MHOA as Lakeville's tobacco agent for the same one-year term; the board's vote will allow MHOA to conduct compliance checks and education under the grant and to coordinate with local enforcement and health staff.
Why it matters: The MOU will direct grant-funded tobacco-control work in town, including underage compliance checks and education efforts. The arrangement places an outside public-health organization in the role of tobacco agent for the year.
Vote: The Select Board moved, seconded and approved the MOU and the appointment on roll call with no discussion.
