Local nonprofit outlines services and statistics for sexual-assault and child-abuse awareness month

At Marion County Council, Linda Adams, trauma counselor with the PD Coalition, briefed the council on services and outreach planned for April, which the coalition observed as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Adams provided state-level statistics and described the coalition’s services. She said South Carolina reported 285 human-trafficking tips in 2024 and that 94% of those tips involved trafficking; she also said crisis centers in the state serve roughly 70,000 victims and survivors each year and that most primary victims know their offender. Adams described services PD Coalition offers to local residents: a 24-hour crisis line; a free emergency shelter for women and minor children (up to 90 days); a transitional shelter (up to one year); trauma counseling; court accompaniment and hospital advocacy; and offender programs intended to provide evidence-based interventions.
Adams asked council members and the public to remember PD Coalition in charitable giving and outlined planned April activities and events the coalition will host.
The presentation was delivered during the public-comment/presentations portion of the meeting; no council action was taken on the presentation itself.
