Board approves school-based family specialist program job description, contracts and pay schedule

The Piedmont Board of Education approved the job description, two contracts and a compensation schedule to launch a school-based family specialist (SBFS) program intended to place specialists at Piedmont schools.
Board members approved a job description the board had not previously adopted; staff said the positions are new and must be posted after the board signs off on the description. Board members heard that the specialists will be assigned to buildings but can assist other schools when needed and will partner with existing licensed professional counselors (LPCs) assigned to site clusters.
The board approved a contract with the Canadian County Board of Commissioners to reimburse the district for 20% of the SBFS cost; members were told that contract terms are one year and the county will be invoiced by the district. Separately, the board approved a contract with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services to reimburse 80% of the positions. Staff described the SBFS positions as 12-month appointments.
The board also approved a compensation schedule for SBFS positions that accounts for prior experience; staff said certified teachers and former DHS employees may receive step credit for prior service, and that for most candidates the SBFS pay will be lower than teacher pay. Board members asked how step placement will be determined and were told experience (including prior teacher service and DHS experience) would be considered.
All SBFS items were approved by unanimous vote.
