Stillwater Middle School students recognized for Kamioka, Japan exchange visit

The Stillwater Public Schools Board of Education on Tuesday recognized a delegation of Stillwater Middle School students who recently traveled to Kamioka, Japan as part of a sister‑school exchange.

Teacher and sponsor Jake Ehrlich introduced four students who described elements of the trip, including visits to multiple schools, participation in a sister‑school anniversary celebration and opportunities to wear traditional kimonos. “We had a delegation from Japan come last year, so that got that ball started,” Ehrlich said, describing reciprocal visits and the restart of the district’s exchange program.

Students named favorite experiences and foods: one student said ramen at a small shop was a highlight; another mentioned trying octopus and fried shrimp; another recalled being served salmon and Wagyu beef. Ehrlich said the visit included a municipal welcome — “that bottom photo, we’re actually meeting with the mayor of Kamioka” — and classroom and cultural events arranged by community members in Kamioka.

Ehrlich and board members thanked the students for representing the district. No board action was required; the item was a recognition during the communications portion of the agenda.
