Dr. Jacob Reach, Austin ISD chief officer of governmental relations and board service, briefed the board on March 27 about the Texas Education Agency’s intruder detection audits.
Reach said the audits are part of a statewide program initiated after a June 2022 directive from Texas Governor Greg Abbott asking the Texas School Safety Center to establish random inspections to assess school access control measures. In the 2024–25 audit process TEA conducted intruder detection inspections at 16 Austin ISD campuses during February and March; Reach reported that at least five of those sites did not meet one or more standards and that the district would have 60 days to implement corrective actions and return documentation to TEA.
Reach said the total number of audited AISD schools for the year is 68 and that TEA is expected to audit about 75% of Texas schools annually under this process. No specific campuses were named in the board presentation. "At least five of those schools failed to meet one or more standard during those audits, and we'll have 60 days to implement corrective actions and submit those back to the agency," Reach said.
Why it matters: Intruder detection audits evaluate physical access controls and other security measures. Failure to meet standards triggers a corrective‑action requirement, and the district must document remedial steps to TEA.
Next steps: the administration will track required corrective actions and report back to the board as required by TEA timelines.
