The Jefferson County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the week of April 2025 as National Library Week and heard presentations from Jefferson County Library staff and trustees on the system’s services and community role.
"Thank you for supporting our libraries," said Charlene Marshall, Jefferson County Library System administrator, as she described daily uses of library services, from children’s reading programs and computer access to assistance for residents experiencing housing instability. Marshall said libraries provide free internet access, printing and scanning services and host programs such as a Thousand Books Before Kindergarten initiative.
Marilyn Neumann, president of the Jefferson County Library System board, told commissioners the six county libraries see high traffic across age groups and urged continued financial support to maintain hours and services. Marshall and board members stressed that grant funds help programs but do not reliably pay operating costs.
Commissioners recorded their support and approved the proclamation by motion and voice vote. No amendments or funding decisions were made at this meeting.
The presentation emphasized the libraries’ role as community hubs where residents access online databases, job-search resources, early-literacy programs and meeting space. Library representatives noted they frequently assist patrons without reliable housing or personal technology and highlighted the need for stable operating support.
The board thanked the library delegation for the presentation and moved on to subsequent agenda items.
