State Maternal Mortality Review: overdose, mental health and postpartum care drive most pregnancy-related deaths

State public-health officials and the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) presented a report to the oversight committee describing maternal deaths in New Hampshire and recommendations to reduce preventable deaths.
"In the calendar year 2023, we had 5 pregnant associated deaths," Caroline Yamasege, maternal and child epidemiologist at the Division of Public Health Services, said. She told lawmakers three of the 2023 deaths were from substance-use overdose, two from cardiovascular causes, and one was a homicide; the MMRC aggregates multi-year data to assess trends.
