Polk County commissioners approve supplemental FY24-25 budget to boost mediation and school funds

The Polk County Board of Commissioners on March 26, 2025 approved Resolution 25-06, a supplemental budget for fiscal year 2024-25 that increases the domestic mediation fund and the county school fund.

The supplemental budget was required because the requested adjustments to two funds exceeded 10% of their operating budgets, county staff said. Mr. Hansen, a county staff member presenting the item, told the board the domestic mediation fund received a state funding increase “greater than we’ve ever had before” and that the county school fund rose because of higher excise-tax collections that are passed through to that fund.

Under the change, the domestic mediation fund balance is being adjusted from $73,000 to $165,000 — an increase of roughly $92,000 — and the county school fund, originally budgeted at $186,000, is increased by $40,000. Hansen said the supplemental budget is required by law when a fund adjustment exceeds 10% of its operating budget.

The motion to approve Resolution 25-06 was moved and seconded and, after the board called for the vote, passed unanimously.

The county did not provide additional detail at the meeting about which specific state grant or statute triggered the larger domestic mediation award; Hansen characterized the increase only as an uptick in state funding. The county likewise described the county school fund increase as derived from higher excise-tax collections that are passed through to schools.

The supplemental budget will be incorporated into the FY24-25 appropriations as specified in Resolution 25-06; the resolution number and the affected funds were recorded on the meeting agenda and approved by the board.

Minutes and the approved resolution will provide the formal accounting entries and any implementing instructions for county staff.
