The Town of Lakeville Park Commission on March 27 approved the seasonal field-use application from the local youth softball organization (recorded in the meeting as Free Lakes softball), but emphasized the permit depends on completion of several infrastructure repairs.
The applicant told the commission practices would start April 1 with games beginning April 26 and provided a season window that runs through July 30. Commissioners and parks staff said lights, poles and irrigation must be operational before the league uses evening hours. Parks staff reported delays getting two replacement light poles and associated wiring completed because of supply and contractor scheduling; they expected poles to be installed soon but cautioned that the lights themselves might not be ready until later in spring.
Commissioners also discussed field surfacing and maintenance. Volunteers and league representatives described recent deliveries of stone dust and a 9.5‑ton truckload of field mix the league said previously cost roughly $337 for a similar delivery; teams offered to rake and spread material if the town arranges a dump location and access. The commission noted that some field repairs and larger installations (for example, replacing light poles or major irrigation work) may require contractor bids and could carry prevailing-wage implications that raise the material/labor cost.
Other operational notes recorded in the meeting: - A short-term plan for irrigation: the parks director said sprinklers cannot be fully commissioned for several weeks; an irrigation contractor will dig and assess needed repairs before the mid‑May irrigation start. - Volunteer contributions and a newly purchased storage container were credited with improving equipment access; the parks department said volunteer labor previously had regulatory limits and that some repair work still needs administrator approval. - Clinics run by league volunteers (one-hour pitching/catching sessions for registered players) were characterized by commissioners as part of practice rather than paid outside clinics and therefore treated as regular team activities.
The commission approved the application by voice vote after discussion and asked staff to notify the league of the conditions: confirm pole and irrigation repairs before permitting extended evening hours and coordinate any large repairs with the parks department so prevailing-wage and procurement rules are followed.
Commissioners and league representatives agreed to meet in the field to confirm a permanent layout, restroom access and electricity locations before the season begins.
