Morris Park and Allerton libraries expand after‑school and teen studio programs

Library staff told Community Board 11 that the Morris Park and Allerton branches are expanding after‑school homework help and teen‑oriented studio programs and resuming a mix of informal and formal English‑language classes.
Manuel Martinez, speaking for the library, said both branches run after‑school programs Monday through Thursday that include snacks and homework help. He said a teen studio at Allerton — equipped with microphones and music production tools — will hold an open house in April to demonstrate recording and production equipment to teenagers. The library will also offer both informal drop‑in English sessions and formal evening English classes that require registration.
“Those happen in the evenings, but we are also doing informal just drop in sessions for anyone that wants to practice their English,” Manuel said, and he added that formal classes require registration.
Early literacy programming for children under 5 was scheduled to start a new eight‑week Saturday series beginning in April, and Allerton planned author events and teen advisory programs and to continue college and career pathways (CCP) services for youth, which include resume help and FAFSA assistance.
Staff said basic computer‑literacy classes run twice a month on Tuesday mornings but that low attendance may lead to a shift of resources toward the teen studio and other programming.
Branch staff requested that interested residents check branch calendars and contact the library for registration details and dates for the April open house and early literacy series.
