The New Providence Board of Education conducted routine business and approved a package of agenda items by roll call at its March 27 meeting, and it voted unanimously to revise the 2024–25 school calendar to use two unused inclement weather days on Monday, April 21 and Friday, May 23.
The board approved the minutes of the business and closed meeting of Feb. 20. Finance items numbered 1 through 9 on the agenda and facilities item 1 were approved in separate motions and roll calls. Education agenda items 1 through 3 and personnel agenda items 1 through 10 were also approved by roll call.
Policy actions included first reads of new and revised policies and regulations: Policy 3351 and 4351 (Healthy Workplace Environment for teaching staff and support staff), Policy 5512 (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying), Policy/Regulation 5533 (Student Smoking), Policy/Regulation 7441 (Electronic Surveillance in School Buildings and on School Grounds), and Regulation 8820 (flag display practices). The board also held a second read of Policy 9163 (Spectator Code of Conduct for interscholastic events). Board presenters described the first/second reads as mandated revisions and district clarifications arising from guidance and agreements with education and law enforcement partners.
Calendar revision: Superintendent Dr. Zirpoli explained the district calendar contains four built‑in emergency days for the 2024–25 school year, of which one had already been used, leaving three. Under the teachers’ negotiated contract one of the remaining emergency days must be scheduled as a holiday on Friday, May 23 (the Friday of Memorial Day weekend); the third unused day was placed on Monday, April 21 (Easter Monday) by board motion and roll call so the district can avoid conflicts with statewide testing, AP exams and end‑of‑year events in May and June.
Public comment on the calendar revision drew no speakers. The board then recessed for a closed session on student matters.
