The Zion City Council on March 4 adopted two resolutions of commendation recognizing police officers and a fire lieutenant for emergency responses, and approved a promotion within the Zion Police Department.
The council read and approved a resolution honoring Officers Coggins and Pachowski and Zion Fire Department Lieutenant Urbanek for a January welfare check that led to medical care and repairs to a resident's inoperable furnace. Mayor McCain and the clerk read the resolution into the record, and Commissioner McDowell moved approval; Commissioner Frierson seconded. A roll-call vote recorded ayes and the motion carried.
Council also approved a second resolution commending Officers Birchfield and Officer Connor Lima for actions at a structure fire on Oct. 29 that assisted an elderly tenant with a medical emergency. That resolution similarly passed on a motion by McDowell and a second by Frierson.
Separately, the council approved a promotion request from Chief Barton to elevate Sergeant John Myers to lieutenant, with the promotion not taking effect until the start of the next fiscal year. Chief Barton described expanded administrative duties associated with a new lieutenant rank, including oversight of records, mission-critical staffing changes tied to a transition to Lake Com dispatch services, and training responsibilities. Commissioner McDowell moved approval of the promotion; Commissioner Fisher seconded. A roll-call vote recorded ayes and the motion carried.
Mayor McCain and council members publicly thanked the named personnel for their service.
