County declares October Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Community Health Centers outlines screening events

The Oklahoma County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution declaring October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the county and heard a presentation from Community Health Centers of Oklahoma about screening and outreach programs.

Margarita Shaw, representing Community Health Centers of Oklahoma, described the organization's network of clinics and services including medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and case management. She said Community Health Centers operates 3D mammography Monday–Friday at the Mayor Mahoney Health Center and will host a My Sister, Myself event on Tuesday, Oct. 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. that will include survivor testimonies, education and on-site opportunities to schedule mammograms. Shaw said the center aims to provide mammograms to more than 100 women and that Oklahoma Project Woman will provide free mammograms for uninsured patients.

Commissioner comments included a motion to permit county staff to post flyers about the event throughout county buildings to help increase attendance; the motion passed. Benita Hoover, identified as director of the law library and a breast cancer survivor, spoke in support and said early detection saved her life.

The board also approved a proclamation recognizing October 2025 as Oklahoma County 4-H month and heard about the Oklahoma County Hugs Drive, a winter-clothing donation effort organized by the county extension office.
