District assessment staff presented a February snapshot of STAR and other interim assessment results to the board, described areas of progress and gaps, and outlined an accompanying schedule of teacher trainings ahead of end‑of‑year assessments.
The presenter used a color‑coding approach to compare current results with last year’s STAR (red = >10% decline, green = within 10% and blue = surpassed last year). Staff said third grade reading scores were close to last year but noted that emergent bilingual and Spanish‑language assessment results lagged. Fourth and fifth grades showed green and blue results in many areas, and middle‑school assessments were generally steady or improved from baseline. Staff said science instruction in K‑4 requires emphasis because the fifth‑grade science assessment tests K‑5 standards; district specialists plan a series of topical trainings to address low TEKS areas.
District leaders announced in‑person and virtual training opportunities: ECR (extended constructed response) writing trainings for grades 3–5, science TEKS workshops, math problem‑solving sessions and other supports. Staff proposed paying teachers for attendance at after‑school training sessions and discussed options for delivering some training during planning periods, substitute coverage for in‑day sessions, or face‑to‑face sessions where interaction is important. The board discussed requiring targeted teacher attendance for campuses with significant gaps and suggested principals be asked to send core teachers to specific sessions.
Staff said the trainings are planned for late March and into the spring, with additional summer dates already mapped for teacher compensation and optional days. Trustees thanked staff for the data and urged principals to ensure attendance at training sessions in target grades.
