Town staff told the Sykesville mayor and council on March 10 that the long-planned South End streetscape project will begin mobilization next week.
Staff said the Baldwin Station parking lot will be closed for about two months while crews stage equipment and materials. To reduce impact on downtown merchants and visitors, the town will open the Public Works yard on Bridal for weekend parking and is preparing temporary signage and online maps so drivers can find alternate parking. Staff said they had notified a merchant liaison, who would distribute details to businesses downtown.
Council discussion covered coordination with the Baldwin Station construction work and confirming that most work in the lot will be repaving, a sidewalk tie-in and removal of a concrete island. Contractors will use some of the lot for staging and may coordinate storage in other nearby town facilities. Staff said the streetscape project was first drafted as part of the town's comprehensive plan in 2020 and has been through about two years of engineering and permitting, including work with state highway authorities.
The town urged downtown residents and merchants for patience, noting some closures are temporary and that public communications with maps and schedules will be posted on the town website and Facebook. Parking priority in the alternative lot is intended for merchants and employees, staff said.
