Syracuse-Wawasee Trails gives progress report on Wawasee South segment; board acknowledges prior support letter

The executive director of Syracuse-Wawasee Trails updated the Kosciusko County Parks and Recreation Board on the Wawasee South trail project, describing current engineering work and fundraising partnerships for a 2.2-mile segment intended to improve school-to-school connections and safer routes for South Shore residents.

The director (name not provided in the meeting transcript) said engineering firm USI is conducting the engineering phase for an initial 1.2-mile section from Grandview to Ideal Beach and that the project has secured support from several local funders and foundations. "This little 2.2 mile section of trail...is the next level expansion for us because it's gonna provide, a school to school connection for our Syracuse, students and their families," the director said.

The director said the Wawasee South segment will eventually help connect to North Webster and the countywide Greenway network, and that an alternative, more scenic alignment exists but would be more expensive.
