Summary
The Rules Committee voted to appoint America Nishele Sanchez to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force for a term ending April 27, 2026, after hearing presentations from applicants and public comment; committee members praised Sanchez’s experience on other city commissions and in school administration.
The Rules Committee appointed America Nishele Sanchez to the Sunshine Ordinance Task Force for a term ending April 27, 2026, and forwarded the appointment to the full Board with a positive recommendation.
Sanchez, a District 10 resident and school principal, described seven years of service on city commissions, including six years on the Southeast Community Facilities Commission and one year on the Human Rights Commission. She emphasized experience with public hearings, the Brown Act and navigating government processes as relevant to the Sunshine Task Force’s mandate to oversee public records and open meetings access.
President Mandelmann and Acting Chair Steven Sherrill both noted the importance of balancing transparency with administrative costs. Mandelmann said sunshine is important but can at times be “excessively burdensome” and encouraged task force members to seek improvements that preserve transparency while reducing unnecessary administrative cost and delay.
Several public speakers addressed the appointment. An applicant, Anas Charley Bodkin, discussed prior work and proposals to improve task force efficiency and public-records access, including shortening the average number of days to hold hearings on complaints and enhancing data standardization and public-facing dashboards. Public commenters included Peter Chudinoff, who spoke in support of a different applicant, and statements from the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club criticizing perceived political considerations in selection. Fala Futa, a former commissioner, urged the committee to appoint Sanchez and highlighted her commission experience.
After discussion the committee moved to appoint Sanchez and to send the nomination to the full Board with a positive recommendation; the motion passed without objection (recorded votes: Member Mandelmann, aye; Chair Sheryl/Sherrill, aye; Walton excused).
