Beaver County prepares for large weekend race; road closures and park disruptions planned

A department head told the Beaver County commissioners on March 12 that the county will host a multi‑day race this weekend that will affect park access and roads in and near Brady's Run.
"The annual rapid raccoon race will be starting, this Friday, with the 5 k. There's 12 races across the weekend," the department head said. The speaker warned that there will be road closures throughout the weekend, likely beginning at 4 a.m. Saturday and continuing through about 4 p.m. Sunday. "They will be manned with either sheriff's deputies or race staff. We have about 1,500 registrations this year. That's up 500 from last year," the department head said, adding that the organizers reported participants from "33 states represented, 16 international participants" and that the total number of visitors and support teams could be roughly 2,500.
The department head urged the public to use other county parks during the race and noted temporary disruption to some park facilities. Separately, the county announced that Penn Power contractors will perform maintenance by helicopter next week at Fresh Creek; the back loop of that park will be closed during daylight hours while crews run and secure power lines.
Officials also said county crews will provide logistical support for the Saint Patrick's Day parade and will move barriers and signage as needed. No votes or formal actions were taken during the work session on these operational matters; speakers described them as scheduled maintenance and planned event operations.
