Committee approves measure to begin research farm grants from Prop 4 bond funds

Assemblymember Alanis presented AB 1486, which would trigger grant-making from bonds authorized by Proposition 4 (Safe Drinking Water, Wildfire Prevention, Drought Preparedness and Clean Air Bond Act of 2024) to support public postsecondary research farms designated as agricultural experiment stations or research institutes. "Prop 4 made $15,000,000 available to provide for grants to public postsecondary educational institutions that are designated as agricultural experiment stations or agricultural research institutes to develop research farms to improve climate resiliency," Alanis said, urging that the program begin sooner than the budget currently provides.
Supporters, including Sustainable Conservation, registered in favor. Committee members from agricultural districts stressed the need to fund research farms that advance climate-resilient production and benefit students and rural economies. Committee amendments updated a completion date for the research farm grant program; the committee voted to pass the bill, sending it to Natural Resources. The clerk recorded ayes from Soria, Alanis, Aguiar-Curry, Connolly, Gonzales, Hadwick and Ransom (8 votes recorded later in the committee summary).
