Committee moves bill to modernize California Table Grape Commission law

Assemblymember Solache presented AB 482, which would modernize the statutory law creating the California Table Grape Commission, update language and increase the maximum assessment caps the commission may collect. Kathleen Nave, president of the commission, told the committee the statute dates to 1967 and has had only one amendment since 1982, and that the commission has not raised its assessment since 1994. "We have not raised the assessment," Nave said. "The commission board hasn't since 1994, because we've been close to the cap since that time."
The author and witnesses framed the measure as a technical modernization to align the statute with current practices and to allow the commission board the flexibility to set assessments if needed. No opposition was recorded in committee testimony. The committee adopted a motion to pass the bill to Appropriations; the roll call showed ayes from Soria, Alanis, Aguiar-Curry, Connolly, Gonzales, Hadwick and Ransom (5+; clerk later confirmed sufficient votes and left the file open for absent members).
