The Montebello City Council approved plans and specifications and authorized advertisement for bids for the Montebello Boulevard Street Resurfacing project, which will repave the roadway between Lincoln and Los Angeles and include center medians, stormwater infiltration features and related safety and beautification work.
Public works staff described the scope as resurfacing the roadway, addressing potholes and adding center medians and stormwater treatment elements required by state standards. Staff said the project will focus on the segment of Montebello Boulevard just north of a recent separate project and will include coordination with the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and state/regional partners. The staff estimate for construction duration after award was approximately six months; the contractor will provide a phasing and means‑and‑methods schedule as part of construction planning.
Councilmember Scarlett Peralta pulled the item from the consent calendar for explanation and asked whether the work would be phased and how the city would manage traffic impacts during construction. Staff said phasing will be detailed by the successful contractor but confirmed the city is coordinating with regional partners and first‑responder departments to route traffic and protect local access as much as possible. Staff also said the plant palette for medians has been identified but can be discussed further to favor drought‑tolerant native species.
Councilmember Peralta moved to approve the plans, seconded by Councilmember Alonso. The council carried the measure on roll call with unanimous support (Romero, Tamayo, Peralta, Alonso, Mayor Melendez all voting "aye"). Staff will proceed with bid advertisement and return with the lowest responsible bidder for contract award and construction scheduling.
The item was presented as a consent‑calendar item and approved as routine infrastructure maintenance and streetscape enhancement work. The council discussed opportunities to refine landscaping choices for medians and the need to coordinate detours and truck routing to limit impacts to local residential streets.
