Sixteen members of the public who were signed up to speak told the Mackinac Straits Corridor Authority that the Line 5 tunnel project risks Michigan’s Great Lakes, tribal rights and regional economies and that permitting and oversight require fuller review.
Speakers included tribal members, environmental organizations and Michigan residents who raised similar concerns: Enbridge’s safety record, the adequacy of geotechnical and seismic studies, the project’s climate impacts and whether state and federal permitting have fully considered environmental and treaty issues. Julie Gysinger of Oil and Water Don’t Mix and the Sierra Club said, “The tunnel is a false solution,” and urged the Corps to complete a full, public review. Denise Petoskey, speaking as an Indigenous person, described the cultural and economic dependence of her community on the lakes and said the health and prosperity of her community “depend on it.”
