The Historic Landmarks Commission accepted a historic structures report for 712 San Pascual Street on March 26, 2025, concluding the 1910 Craftsman bungalow is eligible for listing on the City of Santa Barbara’s historic resources inventory.
Consultants Pamela Post and Tim Hazeltine of Post Hazeltine Associates presented the report, which situates the house within the working-class development of the West Side and the early 20th‑century pattern of modest craftsman houses. The report notes the house’s retained features: horizontal wood siding, gable roofs with extended eaves and exposed rafter tails, original doors and sash windows, and an intact porch composition. The consultants said the house makes a substantial contribution to a largely intact row of early 20th‑century houses on the east side of the 700 block of San Pascual Street and that continued study could identify a small historic district on the block.
The report recommended inventory listing for the primary house but found the detached corrugated-metal garage does not contribute and is not eligible. Commissioners discussed the streetscape contribution and the social history that these working-class houses represent; one commissioner called the area “ripe” for a broader survey. The commission voted to accept the consultants’ recommendations.
Staff will record the report and proceed with the inventory update as appropriate.
