Historic Landmarks Commission designates 804 Moreno Road a structure of merit

The Historic Landmarks Commission of the City of Santa Barbara adopted Resolution 2025-4 on March 26, 2025, designating the Craftsman-style residence at 804 Moreno Road as a historic structure of merit.

The staff presentation by Nicole Hernandez described the house as a 1920 Craftsman bungalow identified as significant in the Lower Riviera survey and noted character-defining features including exposed rafters, a front flat dormer, an expressive beveled-glass front door, and a large sandstone chimney and fireplace. Hernandez said the house retains sufficient integrity despite a small rear addition and a rooftop deck on the garage.

The designation drew brief public comment from the new homeowners, who said they moved into the house four days earlier and described an ongoing restoration, and from neighborhood resident Jennifer Stafford, who noted the house's connection to local history and corrected a street-name reference. Commissioner remarks praised the house’s craftsmanship and integrity; one commissioner said the property “could even qualify as a landmark” because of its intact details.

On a roll-call vote the commission recorded unanimous support. Commissioners voting yes: Dordon, Drury, Ennsberg, Lindbeck, McClure, Butler, Vice Chair Ullie and Chair Grumbine. The commission issued a resolution of designation at the meeting and offered the owners the designation certificate without delay.

The action adds 804 Moreno Road to Santa Barbara’s roster of recognized historic resources and records the commission’s finding that the property contributes to the architectural heritage of the Lower Riviera.
